One month later, the courtroom filled once again for sentencing.

Unlike the first day of the trial, there were no crowds cheering outside. There were no firefighters defending Cole's name. The city that had once celebrated him now watched in silence.

Cole entered wearing a prison uniform instead of the captain's dress blues he had once worn with pride.

His shoulders were slumped, and his hair had begun to gray around the temples.

Jade was brought in separately.

She refused to look toward Cole.

The judge reviewed every conviction one final time before delivering the sentence.

"Captain Cole Barrett abused the trust placed in him by his department, his family, and this city. Rather than accept responsibility for a tragic mistake, he chose deception, fraud, and the desecration of his own mother's remains."

The courtroom remained silent.

"This court sentences the defendant to twenty-two years in state prison."

Cole slowly closed his eyes.

There was no outburst.

No protest.

Only defeat.

The judge turned toward Jade.

"Firefighter Jade Mercer knowingly participated in the concealment of evidence, accepted unlawful financial benefits, and repeatedly lied to investigators."

"The court sentences the defendant to twelve years in state prison."

Jade burst into tears.

"Please... I didn't mean for any of this to happen..."

The judge didn't respond.

Neither did anyone else.

For the first time since the fire, excuses no longer mattered.

As deputies prepared to escort them away, Cole suddenly stood.

"Your Honor... may I say one thing?"

After a brief pause, the judge nodded.

Cole turned toward me.

"Nora... I know I don't deserve forgiveness."

"No," I answered quietly. "You don't."

"I loved my mother."

"Then you should have protected her."

His eyes filled with tears.

"Every night I see her falling."

"That's something you'll have to live with."

"If I could trade places with her, I would."

"You had that chance," I replied.

"The moment Marcus offered to take over the rescue, you could have chosen your mother instead of Jade."

Cole lowered his head.

He couldn't deny it.

"I destroyed everything," he whispered.

"Yes."

"I lost my mother."

"Yes."

"I lost you."

"Long before today."

The deputies placed handcuffs on his wrists.

He didn't resist.

As he walked toward the courtroom exit, he stopped beside Jade.

She refused to meet his eyes.

"I'm sorry," Cole said.

Jade laughed bitterly.

"Sorry?"

"Everything I did was for you."

"No," Jade replied coldly.

"Everything you did was for yourself."

"When things were easy, I loved being beside the city's hero."

"When things fell apart... there was nothing left worth saving."

Those words struck Cole harder than the sentence itself.

Without another glance, Jade followed the deputies out of the courtroom.

Rachel quietly gathered our files.

"It's over," she said.

"Almost," I replied.

The divorce hearing took less than twenty minutes.

Given Cole's convictions and documented misconduct, the judge granted every request Rachel had filed months earlier.

The marriage was officially dissolved.

Elaine's estate remained exactly as she intended.

Cole received the single dollar she had left him in her will.

The clerk handed him the check before deputies escorted him away.

He stared at it for several seconds before quietly placing it into his prison property envelope.

It was the last gift his mother would ever give him.

Outside the courthouse, reporters asked whether I finally felt free.

I looked toward the afternoon sky.

"Freedom didn't begin today," I answered.

"It began the day I stopped trying to save someone who never wanted to be saved."

As I walked down the courthouse steps with Rachel and my mother beside me, I realized there was nothing left tying me to the life I had once known.

Cole had lost his career.

He had lost his reputation.

He had lost his freedom.

Most importantly, he had lost the only people who had truly loved him.

For him, there was nothing left to save.

For me, there was finally a future waiting beyond the pain.

You finished
