Isabela sat on the edge of my couch, staring down at her hands.

For several minutes, neither of us spoke.

The silence felt strange.

We had grown up together, shared the same birthday, the same house, and the same parents.

Yet I suddenly realized how little I actually knew about the person sitting across from me.

I opened the envelope.

The letter was several pages long.

She admitted everything.

The secret family group chat.

The pills in my milk.

The missed family portrait.

Even the way she had encouraged Santiago to stay close to her.

I read every word without interrupting.

When I finished, I placed the letter on the table.

Why?

Isabela's eyes filled with tears.

Because I was scared.

Of me?

She nodded.

You were always better at things that mattered.

You studied harder.

You never needed anyone to tell you what to do.

People thought I was perfect, but I knew how much of it was an act.

I looked at her quietly.

You had Mom and Dad.

You had everyone.

I know.

Her voice broke.

That's what makes it worse.

I had everything, and I still couldn't stand the thought of you having something I didn't.

I shook my head.

You didn't need to destroy me to feel important.

I know.

She wiped her tears.

I'm not asking you to forgive me.

Good.

Her eyes lifted to mine.

I just wanted you to know the truth.

I stood and walked toward the window.

Outside, New York was alive with lights and traffic.

This city didn't know my family.

It didn't care which sister was supposed to be the star.

That thought made me smile.

Isabela stood behind me.

Are you happy here?

I turned around.

Yes.

She nodded slowly.

Then I did one thing right.

What?

Leaving you alone.

For the first time, I almost smiled at her.

Maybe.

She picked up her bag.

I should go.

I walked her to the door.

Before she left, she stopped.

Santiago is outside.

My expression hardened.

He came with me.

I didn't invite him.

Neither did I.

She hesitated.

He says he wants to apologize.

I don't want his apology.

I know.

She opened the door.

Then she walked away.

A few seconds later, Santiago appeared at the end of the hallway.

The moment he saw me, he stopped.

He looked nervous.

I'd never seen him look nervous around me before.

Alejandra.

I didn't answer.

I don't need you to forgive me.

Good.

He took a slow breath.

I was wrong.

You were never a supporting actor.

I looked at him.

You said I was.

I know.

And I believed it.

His voice dropped.

I thought Isabela needed me more than you did.

But when you left, I realized I had confused being needed with being loved.

I felt no satisfaction hearing it.

Only distance.

You made your choice, Santiago.

And I made mine.

He nodded.

I know.

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small box.

I stared at it.

It's something I bought months ago.

I never gave it to you.

I don't want it.

He slowly put the box away.

That's okay.

There was a long silence.

Then he smiled sadly.

You really changed.

No.

I corrected him.

I finally stopped changing myself for everyone else.

His eyes reddened.

I'm sorry.

I believe you.

But that doesn't mean I want you back.

He nodded once.

I understand.

He walked away.

I watched him disappear down the hallway.

There was no heartbreak.

No desperate urge to call him back.

Only peace.

The next morning, I boarded a train to Boston for my conference.

As the city disappeared behind me, I opened my presentation notes.

My hands were steady.

For eighteen years, I had been told I wasn't the star.

Maybe they were right.

Because I had finally realized something much more important.

I didn't need to be the star of anyone else's story.

I could write my own.

When I arrived at the conference hall, my name was displayed on the main screen.

ALEJANDRA NAVARRO — FEATURED STUDENT RESEARCHER.

I stared at it for a moment.

Then I smiled.

Nobody had put my name there out of pity.

Nobody had chosen me because they needed someone to stand beside another person.

I had earned it.

I walked onto the stage.

The lights came on.

Hundreds of people looked toward me.

For once, I wasn't afraid of being seen.

I took a breath.

Then I began.

You finished
